St. Vincents caters for pupils with emotional and behavioural difficulties from years 8-12. Because of their special educational needs the pupils therefore maybe operating at a reading age below their chronological age.

Following the diagnosis of the learning difficulty pupils will follow an educational plan which is reviewed regularly.

English affects the whole child – the cognitive, affective, spiritual and moral. Through a holistic approach the aims of English be met.

The overall aims of English is to develop critical thought; to equip pupils with reading and writing skills necessary to access the Northern Ireland Curriculum; to foster an interest in reading; to develop the ability to express and communicate opinions attitudes and emotions; to prepare pupils to enter external examinations in year 12.

School Library
Pupils are encouraged to read for enjoyment and interest. Although the library is based in the English classroom, reference books subject-related are displayed in all classrooms. The use of the library is important across the curriculum.
